Davis High Student Government is hosting matchmaking for students to meet friends and connect with others who share similar interests and hobbies.

With complete online learning this year, students, especially sophomores, have struggled to form the bonds that typically come from spending time together in the classroom.

“The thing I miss the most about being in school is just the little conversations you have with random people that you pass through the day that you’re not close enough to text them and be like ‘Hey, want to hang out?’” senior Susannah Costello said.

The Student Government class was looking for a way to unite the student body with an activity or event. Costello got the idea to make a matchmaking form for DHS while scrolling through the video social media platform Tik Tok.

Costello and a couple of other Student Government participants helped create a Google form with questions asking about music taste, hobbies and even personality identifiers like Myers-Briggs or “words that describe you.” The small group of students who created the form will read the responses and match up students with similar interests and compatibility.

“They were doing it to match people up in a relationship way and I was like ‘maybe we can do this in a platonic way and it’ll work out.’ I think it will be very fun […] and maybe some people will start a relationship. You never know,” Costello said.

“Personally it’s been so hard to talk to people outside of my immediate circle. I think it’d just be nice to kind of expand your circle in like a safe space. […] My goal is just to meet new people and hopefully help other people feel less alone in all this,” she added.

The group is considering weekly challenges and making group chats with multiple pairs of people to stay connected and keep conversations going.

Sophomore Mollie Dyer helped with questions and outreach with the matchmaking form. Dyer notes that the hardest part of making friends is finding people who share similar interests.

“Especially as a sophomore, not being able to be at DHS this year, I just really like the idea of being able to make friends […while having] the hard part of making friends done for you,” Dyer said.

Dyer also emphasizes that the anonymity of the form allows students to make friends without making a judgment based on reputation.

“I thought [allowing the form to be anonymous] was pretty cool because I feel like Davis is so small that if I heard someone’s name, I already have a thought about them,” Dyer said.
