On the popular social media site TikTok, a new phrase has been gaining some attention: super straight.

“To my knowledge, [super straight] is when a cisgender heterosexual person will only date other cisgender people, and will not date a trans person of the opposite gender,” Gay Straight Alliance Club president Nicole Holt said.

However, a lot of people are questioning the transphobic nature behind it, claiming it deliberately excludes transgendered people.

Far right groups first brought this term to TikTok and pushed it on to the LGBTQ+ community, claiming it is a new sexual orientation. It caused so much outrage that Tiktok recently banned the hashtag for super straight, marking it as hate speech and a hateful ideology.

“It’s completely fine to have preferences, and it’s fine to have an identity around that. However, Super Straight does not do this,” Holt said. “The identity of super straight is based on who they’re not attracted to, rather than who they are. Additionally, it does have the underlying message that trans people are different than cis people.”

This whole trend can be traced back to one Tiktoker named Kyleroyce. In a public statement, he said, “It is not transphobic, and it was never meant to be.” However after all the backlash the movement has gained, it has also grown support.

“It’s not transphobic to have a preference, and it never should be,” said one Davis High student who asked to remain anonymous.

While the term itself isn’t discriminatory, it can cause discrimination.

“I don’t think the term super straight is necessary, and I think that it’s hurtful to trans people. I think that just straight would suffice, and that super straight is less about preferences and more about being against the trans community,” Holt said.
