Several Davis High student athletes have already verbally committed to play sports at colleges.

Senior Lindsay Taylor has verbally committed to play water polo at Indiana University. She has been playing her sport since she was five years old. She went to Indiana University for a water polo tournament in eighth grade, and has loved the school ever since.

“The team is so amazing, and the program is coached by an amazing coach,” Taylor said.

Another reason why she chose Indiana is because of the school’s elementary education program. Taylor hopes to major in elementary education and become a teacher.

“I like that IU is a big school. Coming from a small town, going to a bigger college is something I’ve always wanted,” Taylor said.

Senior Marina Greenwood has been participating in synchronized swimming for nine years, and has verbally committed to Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts.

“I’m looking forward to swimming for the school, which I didn’t do in high school because there’s no synchronized swimming at Davis High. I’m looking forward to getting to represent our school in competitions rather than just our city,” Greenwood said.

Senior Stella Cardenas has verbally committed to play lacrosse at Colorado Mesa University. She has played lacrosse since fourth grade.

“I love lacrosse so much. There’s never been a point where I’ve wanted to quit,” Cardenas said.

Cardenas’s love of sports has extended beyond lacrosse. Along with varsity lacrosse, she is currently on the varsity field hockey team, a sport she has been playing for all of her three years at Davis High. Prior to high school, she was a competitive swimmer, and hoped to one day join a college swim team. However, in her freshman year, she had to choose between swim and lacrosse.

“I was kind of falling out of love with swim, because I was getting burnt out. I just was like, I’m so much happier and enjoyed lacrosse so much more,” Cardenas said. “I wanted to play lacrosse in college from like, freshman year.”

Cardenas looks forward to already knowing people going into college from her new team.

“I’ll already have my people, I’ve met with the team and I love them all. I’m so excited to play with them. They’re all so nice and inclusive,” Cardenas said.

Cardenas said that she is relieved to be almost finished with the college application process early in her senior year.

“It’s such a weight off my shoulders,” Cardenas said. “I’m really excited to play college ball. It’s been my dream, and now that it’s a reality I’m really excited and I really feel like Colorado Mesa is the place for me.”
