Since the night it went viral, various theories have arisen regarding how “Alex from Target’s” fame came about. Some, including CBS News and the Huffington Post, suggest that there is a marketing company behind the whole phenomena, looking to cash in on the teenager’s sudden fame.

Up until Nov. 2, when the original post was introduced to the viral world, few people would have actually been able to acquaint the term “Alex from Target” with a face. But now he is an international standout with more than 500,000 people who call themselves his followers.

Since the sudden blow-up over “Alex from Target,” some tweeters have been wondering how or why people are so interested in him. While others believe it makes perfect sense.

“I just think it’s a good example of how things can go viral without anyone really knowing why,” said Da Vinci High sophomore Eli Inkelas.

The attractiveness of Alex Lee combined with the humorous idea of overnight fame has attracted a large and very protective fan base to the young employee.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald (an Australian newspaper), Alex is actually being faced with serious problems because of the dangers that come with internet fame.

Harsh criticisms from people angered by his fame, along with threats towards his apparent girlfriends, prove that internet fame can be a dangerous phenomenon.

But is it possible Alex actually knew this was coming even before the picture was taken? According to Breakr, a marketing company who claims to be behind the strange occurrence, Alex did know.

Dil-Domine Jacobe Leonares, Breakr’s CEO, claims that Alex did in fact give permission to a member of Breakr to take the picture. But Jillian Berman of the Huffington Post says that it is unclear if he fully understood where the picture would go.

Inkelas however has his own opinion on the matter.

“It looks like the company that claimed that was lying,” he said. “I bet they were just trying to get their time in the spotlight.”

At this point it is still unknown how or why Alex From Target got so famous so fast, but what is certain is that before too long, a new victim will rise into viral fame, whether they ask for it or not.
