Intramurals are a student-favorite activity that allow students to participate in casual, pre-selected sports during lunch every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in the South Gym.

Intramurals have been directed by physical education teachers Julie Crawford and Daniel Ariola for the past four years.

“It gives us a lot of joy to see kids having fun and being active and playing with their friends,” Crawford said. “Most students are sitting most of the day at school, so this is a great opportunity for students to be up and active and playing.”

The number of students who attend intramurals has varied throughout each year. Currently, about 20-50 students a day show up to play a variety of sports that are offered. “Most popular are basketball and badminton but we are open to student suggestions,” Crawford said.

Students find and join intramurals for different reasons. “I got into intramurals ‘cause I didn’t have a car and wanted to do something fun during lunch,” junior Reyan Islam said.

The amount of students interested in joining could increase if more variety was available, Islam says. “I think that people will only join if they are interested and that once interest in sports overall increases the attendance will increase as well,” Islam said.

The South Gym is always open for students to hang out and have a good time.

“Just come play! It’s fun! Bring a friend! Students always have a place to go at lunch!” Crawford said.
