FACT Club merges activism topics in order to offer students an intersectional environment to tackle the world’s issues in approachable ways.

FACT is a combination of Feminism and Activism Club. Senior Olivia Gonzalez ran Feminism Club last year and senior Emily Haws ran Activism Club last year.

Gonzalez and Haws noticed that they shared goals and members and that it would be most efficient to form one club that addressed a range of issues.

The club meets every other Monday at lunch in P-22. In each meeting one club officer will give a prepared presentation on a feminist, environmental or political issue in the world.

The presentation usually consists of a brief background and summary of the news at hand. And then, maybe most importantly, the presenter gives a rundown on how high school students can make a difference within the subject.

“It is incredibly difficult to feel like you are making a difference in the world… when you’re in high school,” Gonzalez said.

The bite-sized formula the club uses allows students to take in the information in a palatable way that also gives them the tools they need to act in a moderate and consistent manner.

It is easy to get burned out and overwhelmed with the constant flow of information at the fingertips of young people.

But the consistent funnel of the club’s research and dedication to their members establishes a healthy cycle that also allows for the optimization of meaningful action.

The leaders of the club are hard set on their purpose and are the reason for the sustainability and success of the club so far.

“As a Black Muslim girl myself, I understand that not everybody is fortunate enough to have grown up in a generally safe community like Davis,” vice-president Ahlaam Musa said. “So my passion for activism… stems from wanting to amplify people’s voices.”
