“No one I knew was going,” junior Claire Gibson said. “I didn’t wanna go because I don’t generally enjoy school dances and it was on my sister’s birthday,” sophomore Printha Ellis said. “One, I didn’t know anyone that was going. Two, there was an orchestra concert that day. Three, family. There’s a holiday(Chanukah) that we celebrate (on the 7th) but we’re doing it (on the 8th),” sophomore Sophia Stoddard said.

This year’s Dazzling December Dance was canceled due to the lack of participation. “We don’t believe that our students would be interested in attending a dance with 38 students so (we thought) how can we pivot,” Principal Bryce Geigle said.

With only 38 tickets sold in two weeks and expenses up to 4000 dollars, the dance seemed to be unsustainable. “It doesn’t matter if you have 50 or 800 people. It’s the same price,” ASB bookkeeper Teri Arnold said.

The school was able to salvage the dance budget even though it was canceled. “We’re not losing any money. It’s just gonna be shifted to another dance,” Link Crew advisor Tatum Rice said.

This year, Link Crew was supposed to be hosting the Dazzling December Dance to lighten Student Government’s responsibilities. “It was supposed to be a casual dance and kind of feel the gap between Wi-ball and Hoco,” junior Trevor Mills, Link Crew leader said.

Link Crew also inherited stereotypes associated with the dance. “It wasn’t for sophomores. Last year it was publicized as a sophomore-only dance and so people automatically assumed that it was sophomore dance,” Rice said.

Junior Tahna Chew decided not to buy a ticket for the Dazzling Dance because she attended it last year and it left a bad impression. “We showed up and there were 5 people and we left,” Chew said.

However, the dance might not have had a chance from the start due to finals being so close and the end of the semester around the corner. “Kids are just really tired by the end of the year,” Rice said.

Even though the December Dazzling Dance was a flop all hope is not lost yet. “If students wanted we could potentially pivot from a Spring Fair to a Spring Fling,” Geigle said.

To replace the Dance, Link Crew hosted a movie night on Dec.8 instead. “Honestly, just like an outside event, outside of school hours before finals week to relax,” Rice said.
