Blue Devil Pageant, why the name change?

Coming April 11th, Davis High is hosting its annual spring event, rebranded as the Blue Devil Pageant (BDP).

Like a traditional pageant, the event will have several rounds of competition, some of which display the contestant’s talents, along with a question and answer segment.

Senior Sidney Johnson is the committee head of the BDP, organizing dates, forms, and sending out reminders to contestants. “This year [the BDP] is going to be similarly low stakes as last year,” Johnson said. “I’m looking forward to a lot of bonding within the group and just having a good time.”

The event is open to a range of acts and talents. “It’s a great opportunity for artists and people to get their skills out there, reach an audience that they want, or just do something lighthearted and fun to get involved on campus,” Johnson said.

Although the idea is similar, this is the first year the competition has been called the Blue Devil Pageant, according to Student Government teacher Kristin Swanstrom.  “The spring event that we are this year calling the Blue Devil Pageant was years ago Mr Blue Devil, kind of a parody of a beauty pageant, always very funny,” Swanstrom said.

“We transitioned a few years ago to the “Diablo Debutant ” which has a great alliteration but debutant has some historical connotations that are pretty negative and so we wanted to rebrand this year,” Swanstrom said. “Now it will be the BDP which plays nicely on blue devil pride which is a big part of our spirit branding and now it’s also the blue devil pageant.”

Despite the name change, Johnson expects good things from this event. “We changed it to the BDP and we’re still taking that approach where it is chill and relax,” Johnson said. “I think there are going to be a lot more performances. We had a lot of time to develop this as well, so hopefully it is going to be more put together, structured, and well-funded.”

Johnson enjoys the community aspect of the event. “My favorite part is watching all of the contestants get to know each other and put on this performance,” Johnson said.”We as the committee and as everybody who schedules this, we get out the skeleton of it, but it is really the performers who make the show and the event what it is so im excited to see what they do and what they make of this experience.”
