The Davis High School varsity football team was thrashed 56-14 by Monterey Trail in its last game on Friday night, but head coach Steve Smyte was proud of his team’s effort and development during the 1-9 season.

He cited the 19 players with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, the game-to-game improvement of wide receivers Dillard Brown and Majed Eddin, and the fighting-through-injury effort of starting quarterback Shane Reagan during the loss, as some of his reasons to be proud.

“We take away the memories,” Smyte said after the game.

But that’s about all they took away from a game in which Monterey Trail running backs Drake Tofi and Derek Bellamy slashed the field up for a combined 220 yards on 22 carries, and scored two touchdowns a piece. On the flip side of the ball, Monterey’s defense intercepted DHS three times.

However, Davis did have several strong individual performances. Reagan passed for 117 yards and a touchdown after sitting the first quarter out with a knee injury, and Eddin and tight-end Peter Smith snatched 8 balls for 102 yards combined.

Monterey Trail exploded out the gate from the get-go, scoring 21 straight points in the first quarter. Bellamy jackknifed up the gut of the DHS defense on a 2-yard touchdown run, and then struck again on a 9-yard touchdown run.

Finally, Mike Calvan heaved a 49-yard touchdown bomb to Michael Wurthen to cap off the first quarter with a 21-0 Monterey Trail lead.

The second quarter began with more of the same.

Tofi slipped his way through the Blue Devil defensive line and raced 81 yards down the left sideline for the score.

On the next Monterey Trail possession, Tofi scored again on a 1-yard touchdown run, set up by a 24-yard run.

Down 35-0, Reagan sparked a needed pulse into the DHS offense. He connected with Eddin on a 42-yard pass down the left sideline, and a 15-yard facemask penalty was tacked onto the play.

Then Reagan plunged into the teeth of the Monterey Trail defense to score on a 1-yard quarterback sneak.

But the Monterey Trail extinguished that pulse with one play: an interception return for a touchdown, solidifying their lead at 42-7 at halftime.

After halftime, they just added to the downpour.

Juan Albarran smashed his way to pay dirt on a 1-yard touchdown run, and the Mustangs were up 49-7.

But Reagan kept fighting. He was limping around after each play, but he led a second half scoring drive. He threw a 31-yard floater to Kris Mackewitz down the sideline, then hooked up with Peter Smith over the middle, for a 5-yard scoring pass.

However, that touchdown pass would be Davis’ last points of the game.

Trey Flury finished up the game for Monterey Trail with a 5-yard rushing touchdown.

After the game, the Davis High players listened to a proud speech by Smyte. He commended all his seniors on their play during the season and shared a few laughs. Other coaches did the same.

Not mentioned in the article, I’d like to thank coach Smite for making himself available to answer questions throughout the season, he has been very kind.
    Thank you.
