One Direction’s last album Midnight Memories received a very positive reaction, based on the fact that it became the top-selling album of 2013, according to BPI published list, and I can see how their latest album FOUR would once again have girls screaming out loud and holding back their tears.

One Direction, which consists of Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik (21) , has made us proud once again. The boys were put together on the X-Factor in July of 2010 and quickly rose to dominate today’s music industry. One Direction has released an album the past four Novembers, giving meaning to the gift- giving season.

The boys started out as adorable 16-18 year olds, but they have definitely matured over the last four years, and this is evident in their latest album. While their first two albums fit the cookie-cutter sound of bubblegum pop, their third album sort of ventured into an edgier territory and their latest album portrays the sound of a much more matured group.

One Direction has emerged from a two month dry spell. Within the last month, a new world tour has been announced, they have shown up on Sesame Street, participated in the recording of the Band Aid 30 single, and now, a new album.

The band released a teaser (“Fireproof”) on Sept. 8 and a change in their sound was obvious. The teaser promised a more chilled out sound, and that promise was kept, especially with tracks “Fool’s Gold”, “Spaces” and “18”.

“18”, which was written by the band Passenger and singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, shows a sense of nostalgia, with lyrics stating “I want a love like you made me feel/ When we were 18”.

“Spaces” and “Fool’s Gold” are both soft, melancholy pieces that are definitely worth a listen. These tracks are perfect for a rainy day or for studying.

“Ready to Run” is another track that stands out. It sounds a little bit folk- inspired and is a great in the car sing-a-long song or a great song to add to your life soundtrack.

The insanely catchy “No Control” reminds me a little bit of an 80s track and I find myself listening to it in whatever I’m doing at any given time. The prominence of Tomlinson’s voice in the unforgettable chorus also makes the track about ten times better.

This album is like a mixing pot of different vibes, and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” shows the rock side of this album. This track was co-written by Styles and it is irresistible, just like the man himself.

The only majorly disappointing track is “Stockholm’s Syndrome”. It’s evident that the band was attempting to produce a bit of an edgier track, but it just doesn’t work. The vocals were strong, as always, but the musical element just isn’t that great. With the mediocre lyrics along with the strange subject matter, it would have been better if this track hadn’t been released in the first place.

Overall, the boys have pleased the world once again with another awesome album. It is evident that the boys experimented with different types of instruments and tried new things with their voices, and their talent truly shines through each track. There have been rumors of the band breaking up recently, but it doesn’t look like One Direction is leaving us in the near future. However, if FOUR really is One Direction’s last album, it was a great closing soundtrack to their world dominance.
