Entering the 2015 playoffs as the No. 1 seed, the Davis High women’s varsity soccer team wasn’t expecting the No. 16 team to be too much of an issue. They were right.

The Blue Devils easily advanced to the next round of playoffs with a 14-0 win over Edison High of Stockton on May 5.

“We moved the ball and we moved off the ball really well,” junior team captain Gaby Herrera said.  “We played simple, which was good for us.”

Freshman Mia Villegas struck first for the locals in the first three minutes of play. Sophomore Julia Curtis and senior Suleikha Sutter each added goals soon after.

“I told the girls to just continue working on the things that we’ve been working on, and don’t worry about what they’re doing,” head coach Sara Stone said.

Also scoring for the Blue Devils were senior Sophia Hernandez and juniors Herrera, Hannah DeKnikker and Morgan Metler. Sutter finished with five goals, while Curtis finished with three and Villegas with two.

With Edison now dispatched, Davis faces an old rival in the next round in the form of McClatchy High School. Last year, McClatchy defeated the Blue Devils in the first round of the playoffs in a game that included multiple red cards and a brawl.

“Last year left a really bad taste in our mouths…it was a horrible game overall,” Stone said. She believes that now that they have home field advantage, they will make amends for last year.

The players are excited for the McClatchy game as well.

“I’m pretty pumped, because they beat us at their place last year,” Herrera said. “Just the way the game ended [last year], it was really bad, so we’re going to make up for that.”

Davis will play McClatchy at home on Thursday, May 7.

“I want them to come prepared, because I don’t think our season should be ending,” Stone said.
