Quiet but competitive, the Davis High women’s badminton team beat Will C. Wood 14-1 on March 19. DHS is currently at a 7-1 record for the season.

Throughout the matches, many players spent their time with textbooks out and pencils to paper, studying and doing homework.

Sophomore Amalia Myo-Flores said she loves the time between matches because it helps her balance her academic and athletic lives.

“The down time allows me to work on homework and get help from other friends. It also gives me a rest time between games,” Myo-Flores said. “I think it makes it easier to juggle school and sports.”

However, junior Shayleigh Thompson utilizes the time between matches differently.

“It’s really nice to have time to do homework if I need it, but I mostly try to watch other people’s games to learn from them and just see how it’s going,” Thompson said.

Junior Isabella Domby won her singles match, but feels she can improve her play.

“I can work on footwork and serving better. I served out, so I’m definitely going to work on that at practice,” Domby said.

Nevertheless, Domby is pleased with her ranking on the leaderboard.

“I’m No. 2 for singles, and it’s my first time being this high for singles so it feels good,” Domby said.

Thompson, Myo-Flores and Domby are all looking forward to the rest of the badminton season and the future of the team.

“A lot of very talented people are playing and a lot of people who have a lot of potential. The newer girls are starting to scare me with how good they’re getting,” Thompson said.

“I can’t wait for the next game because I love seeing how much my teammates and I improve. I love that we play every game with all that we have,” Myo-Flores said.

“We practice hard and we play hard, and that shows in the scores,” Domby said.
