Due to the flexibility of online school and the attraction of snow season, many Davis High students have found ways to safely travel to Tahoe.

The California Department of Public Health travel advisory states that “Californians should avoid non-essential travel to any part of California more than 120 miles from one’s place of residence.” Therefore, going to Tahoe is permitted, but limiting travel and contact with COVID-19 is advised.

DHS senior Josh Davis has been to Tahoe three times in the last month because his school and sports are less demanding during the pandemic.

“Usually I don’t get to go [to Tahoe], unless maybe if we take a vacation once every couple years. But, this year I got to go substantially more,” Davis said.

Davis went with a group of friends who got tested for COVID-19 beforehand. Instead of going to a crowded designating sledding spot, they found their own hill to minimize exposure to COVID-19.

“My friend knows a good sledding spot that’s away from people, so we brought sleds up and went sledding. It was just like a random hill. We had fun,” Davis said.

DHS sophomore Sophia Koehler stayed at her cabin in Tahoe last week and went skiing at Northstar resort. Ski resorts require masks, 6 feet social distancing and, oftentimes, reservations.

“Weekdays there’s hardly anyone [at the ski resorts]. Fridays and Saturdays are very busy; it’s pretty crowded and hard to find a parking spot,” Koehler said.

Koehler enjoys spending time in Tahoe.

“[Being in Tahoe] is more relaxing but more exciting as well. I definitely would recommend people going up there, it’s a nice escape from down here in Davis,” Koehler said.
