Mollie Dyer says though the Winter Ball is cancelled, spirit week is needed to keep students engaged.

Student government still wanted to continue with spirit week even though Winter Ball was canceled after the return from break.

“It was a safe way to have something going on,” junior class co-vice president Mollie Dyer said.

According to Dyer, the cancellation was already suspected with the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases, so it was not much of a surprise.

Student government advisor Anthony Vasquez did not want the cancellation to “rain on [their] parade,” and he stayed “carefully optimistic” about sticking with spirit week.

In the past, spirit weeks had been a way to get students excited for upcoming events such as dances and sports games. This school year, student government has only been able to put on one spirit week for the Homecoming dance.

“Students needed a way to have fun and actually want to be at school,” Dyer said.

This week, student government is including different spirit days, some that have not been seen before at Davis High. It includes Monochrome Monday, Too Tired Tuesday, Anything but a Backpack Wednesday, Movie Character Thursday and Blizzard Friday. Vasquez hopes to “show more creativity” and try things that are different from Homecoming week’s “classics.”
