After experiencing the challenges of putting her oldest child through college, Joy Klineberg decided to start a College Access Counseling program for local Davis High students.

“I recognized how unfair it was to kids who don’t have an adult helping them,” Klineberg said.

Last year, she got certified as an independent college advisor and started volunteering her time for anyone who needed help on their college application. This fall, with the help of other parent volunteers, she helped students edit their essays.

This spring, Klineberg is hosting a series of Zoom meetings for seniors, juniors and sophomores.

“I wanted to give students some information in February when things are a little bit calmer to get them to start thinking about how they’re going to make the choice,” Klineberg said.

At every meeting a group of DHS alumni shares their advice and their experiences in colleges and then answers questions from students.

“I chose to be part of the panel because I think when I was going through the process I had a lot of difficulties choosing between a couple of major factors,” said Walsh Klineberg, a current student at Rice University, who will be presenting at the third meeting.

All three meetings will be recorded so that students can access them once college decisions come out.
