The Davis High snowboarding team participated in a league race at Alpine Meadows on Feb. 28.

The race was the last of the season before states. One woman on the varsity team placed in the top 15 while two men on the team placed in the top 15.

One of these riders was Kurt Fischer. Fischer has been snowboarding for six years and has been on the DHS team for four years. “I think I did good … as a team we did well but had a few setbacks,” Fischer said.

One of these setbacks was a DHS racer ending up in the emergency room.

Jaxon Kamisky obtained a compensation fracture in his lower back during his second run of the race. “I hooked my heel edge on one of the gates and then flipped over backwards,” Kamisky said.

Ski patrol towed Kaminsky down the mountain and he spent three hours in the ER. “I think I should have been more relaxed and not put as much pressure on myself as I did,” Kamisky said.

The conditions on the mountains were not ideal, with mostly clear skies and a high of 52 degrees Fahrenheit. The snow turned into slush as a result from the hot temperatures, making the course harder to ride on.

The team is now looking to prepare for the state competition at Mammoth Lake on March 7-9.
