The Davis High women’s lacrosse team lost to the visiting St. Francis Troubadours on April 7, with a final score of 10-11.

DHS had a strong offensive showing in the first half, with a goal from freshman Katie McMullen less than a minute into the game.

The team then ran the score up to 7-3 by the end of the first half with goals from sophomore Tory Agnew, junior Devin Hawkes, and seniors Grace Scheuring (2), Devon Morris and Alicia Holman-Evans.

“I think we played really hard,” head coach Jennifer Morris said. “But we didn’t play very smart.”

While the Devils went into the second half with a lead, the Troubadours scored two goals within the first three minutes, beginning to turn the tide of the game.

St. Francis tied the game 7-7 just five minutes into the half. “Definitely defensively we fell apart a little bit,” Devon Morris said. “They definitely gave all their effort. (We) just needed to be a little cleaner.”

The score remained close throughout the final minutes of the game. Devon Morris earned the tenth and final point for the Blue Devils with just a couple minutes on the clock.

The Davis defensive effort prevented a late offensive attack from the Troubadours, but the Devils were unable to score again to tie or win the game.

“I feel like we played kind of manic,” Hawkes said.

Davis had played another game the day before, sweeping the opposing team with a final score of 16-1. “I think it was a difficult game (against St. Francis) because we came from an easy win into a team that plays a very hard game,” senior Peyton Schoen said.

The players also felt the absence of the team’s leading goal scorer, senior Colette Quaas. “We’re missing one of our top attackers in this game, and I think we felt that a lot, (…) we were just disheveled,” Jennifer Morris said. “(We) really were trying to fill her spot and we weren’t ready to do that.”

Despite a less than favorable outcome for the Blue Devils, Jennifer Morris and the players commended the performance of several players and teammates

In the face of strong offensive opposition, the Davis defense stayed strong and slowed down St. Francis. “We have a little defense trio: Anya, Grace and Ella,” Hawkes said. “They’re really good.”

Currently, Davis is still ranked first in the league. “I think we’re still in a strong position. This is only our third loss of the season,” Jennifer Morris said. “We just need to kind of keep building, fixing the mistakes from tonight.”
