The second Pence Gallery Night Market was held on May 20, featuring new young Davis artists sharing their work with the community.

Katharine Schultz organized the event, contacting Davis High teachers for potential participants as well as UC Davis students. “We received about 30 applications this year,” Schultz said. “And we’re trying to give more opportunities to people who haven’t (participated) yet.”

As with the first Night Market held in Oct. 2021, artists at the gallery displayed and sold work through a variety of mediums, including ceramics, jewelry and paintings.

One artist, Roshelle Carlson, uses a Vandercook printing press to create reductive linoleum carvings of earrings, stamps and prints.

“Essentially, I’ll take a linoleum block and every single color that’s in a print is a layer that I carve away,” Carlson said.

It’s Carlson’s first time at the Night Market, though she has participated in local events and galleries before. “I like having people come up and being able to talk to them face to face,” Carlson said. “It’s really great.”

DHS junior Sawyer Spann also participated in the market, having applied after a friend took part in a previous Pence event. His artwork included a portrait of a friend, imagery from a TV show, a study of British portraitist Lucian Freud and several others.

“It’s a good experience,” Spann said.
