Davis High’s mens soccer team lost to Elk Grove, 2-1, on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Halden field.

The loss breaks a two game winning streak, dropping the Devils to 11-3-2 overall and 4-3-2 in league, for 3rd place in the Delta. Elk Grove trails closely in league, sitting at 4th place, with a 7-4-5 overall record, and 3-2-4 league.

Both teams started off the game with strong offensive plays, landing multiple shots on goal. However, neither team scored through this offensive miasma.

With 5 minutes left in the first-half, the stalemate was broken.

Elk Grove took the lead off of a penalty kick. 1-0, Elk Grove.

But, 2 minutes later, DHS sophomore Krisztian Anderson cut through Elk Grove’s defense to tie the game at 1. Impressive stops by junior goalie Dylan Hotaling stalled the scoring going into the half.

According to interim DHS head coach Danddy Jebri, defense was a struggle throughout the game.

“We allowed counter attacks to happen often because we weren’t taking shots, ” Jebri said.

This passivity is what contributed to the loss. as the Devils struggled to finish offensive possessions, not landing a goal in the second half.

Despite this, the defense held strong for nearly 30 minutes of play.

Then, with 9:46 left in the game, Elk Grove struck again.

DHS offensive efforts were too little too late as the whistle blew, and last years Nor-Cal State Champions fell in league for the third time this month.
