Now that the Spring Musical is over, junior Amelia Robinson-Burmester has completed her second show as a leading role at Davis High.

Last year, in the play Mamma Mia, Robinson-Burmester played Donna Sheridan. “I loved portraying Donna because she is such an iconic character,” she said. That experience pushed her to audition for the musical Mean Girls.

Now in her role as Cady Heron, a homeschooled teen being introduced to the world of high school, her acting skills were pushed. “Cady’s character arch is insane. I struggled with making her mean because there are few moments in the show where you see that. So I really worked on showing transformation into being one of the Plastics,” she said.

Through the twists and turns of friendship, backstabbing, and revenge, Robinson-Burmester had to master her character as she developed through the play in order to convey the true message of the story. “It has most definitely helped me with my acting skills. Being a prominent role, you really need to understand the character, so when the audience sees it, it’s both captivating and the audience can feel like they also understand the character,” she said.

As only a junior, she hopes to participate in the school play next year as well, even though she may not pursue acting past college. “I probably will do some shows during college, but I don’t know if it’s something I’m going to do professionally,” she said.

However, acting and singing are not the only thing that draws her to the theater. “The community is a big one for me. Everyone is so positive and nice, and I feel like that can really help people feel more comfortable expressing themselves through acting,” she said,

After the closing night, the show and the cast relish the hard work they put into the musical. “I just love seeing and experiencing the finished product of the show. It’s so much fun to see it come together, and it’s one of my definite highlights,” she said.
