The DHS women’s varsity lacrosse team will be facing off against Concord’s Carondelet High School lacrosse team today for the northern California high school lacrosse semi-finals.  The game begins at 5 p.m. in Concord.

While DHS is number one in its league, with a record of 18 wins and four losses, the team acknowledged that today’s game would be tough considering Carondelet is the number one team in California.

“It’s definitely going to be a tough one; they’re the number one seed,” head coach Jen Morris said. “But we’re not going to change our game plan. We’re going to play like it’s our last game and hit them hard.”

DHS played against Carondelet during this year’s “Play Day,” a low key lacrosse event that gives teams in the area a chance to see their competition. DHS beat Carondelet, but that was two months ago.

“They’ve gotten a lot better, but so have we. I’m excited to see how we match up now,” varsity senior captain Erin Chavanne said.

According to senior goal keeper Kelly Richmond, who has played on varsity since her sophomore year, this year’s success has been a bit of a pleasant surprise.

“Varsity has never made it past the first round of sections before. Normally we’d be done two weeks ago,” Richmond said.

Assistant coach Hillary Harkins believes it is because the team is a “cohesive unit” where “everyone gels and compliments each other” that the team has come so far.

Chavanne echoed Harkins statement, citing the team’s super speed and impressive young talent as the basis for this year’s success.

“We’re a great team. I’m super confident for semi-finals. We’ll play confident and not be afraid of whatever we think [Carondelet is],” she said. “It’s going to be a good game.”
