The Davis High track and field team beat Elk Grove in its third league meet of the season. The DHS hurdling crew contributed greatly to the outcome of the meet which took place at Ron and Mary Brown Stadium on Wednesday, April 24.

According to head coach Spencer Elliott, the goals for the meet were to win all four divisions, men’s and women’s frosh/soph and varsity, and to earn personal records.

“We are at the part of the season where people tend to run fast and jump far and throw far so we wanted to do the best we could individually,” Elliott said.

The Blue Devil hurdlers assisted the team in accomplishing its goals by having individual winners in all divisions of the 100 meter and 110 meter hurdle races and in half of the 300 meter hurdle divisions. Eight of the 13 athletes that make up the hurdling crew also earned PRs.

To start out the first race of the meet, Isolde Pierce won the women’s frosh/soph 100 meter hurdles and hurdled her way to a PR along with Amanda Gong, Marianne Simpson and Juliana Sangervasi.

In the men’s frosh/soph 110 meter hurdles Anthony DiCarlo improved his best time and won the race while Aina Smart-Truco got third in the women’s varsity 100 meter hurdles and also ran the best race of her hurdling career. Rose Stephens won the race in 16.12, 1.95 seconds ahead of the second place finisher from Elk Grove.

Ian McKillap and Daniel Tsang also improved their PRs in the men’s varsity 110 meter hurdles while sophomore Kyle Clancy won the race in 15.58, only .18 seconds off of his best time.

In the 300 meter hurdle races Gong crossed the line first in the women’s frosh/soph division and Gianni Babich did the same in the men’s frosh/soph race. Simpson also earned herself a PR in this event after coming in second to Gong.

The DHS track and field team will have one last league meet next Wednesday on May 1, against Franklin before trying to become league champions in all four divisions on May 8 and 10.
