The Davis High men’s JV basketball team was able to pull off a win over Consumnes Oaks on Jan. 31, by a score of 57-50.

At 5:30 p.m., the scoring got underway with Consumnes Oaks striking first, gaining a lead on the DHS offense that came out slow. By the end of the first quarter however, it was clear that DHS was not out of the game, putting up strong offensive bids to secure 11 points, trailing Consumnes Oaks by three.

The two teams battled back and forth on offense heading into the second quarter, with DHS freshman Kaleb Gee hitting a top of the key three-pointer, followed by a quick retaliation three by Consumnes Oaks.

DHS freshman Jordan McMurray was able to take a foul and make the basket, earning a chance for the three-point play.

The devil defense was also on display, with junior Marcell Gentles instantly stealing the ball back after passing to a turnover Gentles later would make a floater to help put DHS up heading into the half, where they led Consumnes Oaks’ 24 points by three.

The battle continued for the first few minutes of the third quarter, with sophomore Alden McCabe notching another block in what would turn out to be a strong night on defense for McCabe.

McCabe’s defensive efforts were complimented by two three-point shots from freshman Miles Anderson and sophomore Jaden Coaker. Following a string of fastbreaks, the score was evened up at the end of the third quarter, both teams with 44 points apiece.

DHS was able to iron out a solid enough lead to finish strong in the last minutes of the fourth quarter, with highlight plays including a high arching three-point shot by Gee, who also passed the ball quickly in the paint to sophomore Christian Rosas, who laid it in for two points, giving DHS momentum to cruise to a seven point lead at the final buzzer.

Rosas commended the team’s ability to snap out of the losing streak. “It was a good game, we were on a like five loss streak. We were confident and did a lot better,” Rosas said.

McCabe was pleased with his ability to shut down many of Consumnes Oaks’ offensive efforts. “Just being aggressive and being 6’7″ helps,” McCabe said.
