The Davis High Cross Country team tested a season’s worth of work at the Delta League Championships on Oct. 28.

The meet, hosted by William Jessup University, consisted of four separate races: Frosh/Soph boys, Frosh/Soph girls, Varsity girls, and Varsity boys. Frosh/Soph ran a 2-mile course while the Varsity teams undertook 3 miles.

“Coming into this meet, for all four divisions, our goal was to do as best we could,”  Associate Head Coach Tim Groth said. “Maybe bring home some league titles considering it’s our last year in the Delta League.”

The Blue Devil Frosh/Soph boys and girls teams were Delta League champions, winning their divisions by 18 and 29 points respectively. Additionally, freshman Nicolas Duquette took first place in the Frosh/Soph boys race with a time of 10:14.

The Varsity girls placed 3rd overall, with a notable performance from sophomore Avery Wolk, who, following a lengthy battle with injury and illness, took 7th overall in 19:23. “I think I did really well based on (my) situation and I’m glad that I helped my team,” Wolk said.

Wolk’s placement within the top 12 also earned her All-Delta League honors. “She exhibits so much patience, and finally that patience is being rewarded,” Head Coach Bill Gregg said.

Varsity boys were runners-up to longtime rival Jesuit. “I know the guys are disappointed coming in second place, but I felt they ran well and it just wasn’t our day,” Groth said. Senior Lucas Tam was the individual winner with a time of 15:34.

Tam, along with seniors Jay Doctor, Jefferson Wright, and Owen Stevens, was similarly awarded All-Delta League honors for top 12 placement.

The next meet is the Nov. 4 Sac-Joaquin Subsection Championships, where the Blue Devils will attempt to qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Sections. “Based on what I’ve seen throughout the season, I think we have the opportunity to have qualifying groups in all divisions,” Gregg said.
