Tractors, horses, chickens and goats were scattered around the quad for Davis High’s 50th annual FFA week.

The week contained many fun activities and competitions including mullet and truck contests along with the DHS tradition of Kiss the Steer.

FFA advisor Alexander Hess helped throughout the week. “This week is the 96th annual celebration of when the national organization (FFA) was first formed, and It’s Davis Senior High School’s 50th,” Hess said.

Hess enjoys the fun nature of the event. “My favorite part of this week [is] I think everyday, because I get to see all of the students and all of the classes in action,” Hess said. “We try to highlight all week long, the student members at the high school, the ag. careers that are available, and the different aspects of agriculture that people might not be aware about.”

Thursday was occupied with both the truck and mullet contest, which DHS FFA Vice President Kathryn Myler announced.

“We have a truck and tractor show, [but] really it’s just a truck show. We have quite a few trucks out here. We have our cleanest, dirtiest, and our best work truck,” Myler said.

Following the trucks, multiple students with mullets lined up, ready for the judges.

“At our mullet competition we have tallest (party in the front), longest (party in the back), and then we have our most creative so if we have any dyed hair or anything like that,” Myler said.

Winners were provided with hats and gift cards, one of which being junior John Schaal who was awarded for most creative mullet.

“I was excited [to win], I had just gotten a mullet so I figured I might as well enter,” Schaal said. “My favorite thing about my mullet is how it matches my personality and allows me to express myself more fully.”

Ending the week is the tradition of Kiss the Steer, where one DHS teacher who raises the most money for the FFA fundraiser is nominated for the event.

This year, English teacher Gwyneth Bruch raised the most money for the organization and was selected. “To be very honest with you, I got to do it last year, and it’s very exciting to me, and years ago when it was kiss the pig, I got to do that,” Bruch said.

Bruch acknowledges the importance of the Future Farmers of America. “I am always really excited because I love FFA and I want to support them in the best way I can,” she said.
