Take the sophomore walk off campus for lunch

For sophomores who are eager to eat off campus but have not gotten their license yet, there is a solution: the sophomore walk.

Leaving from the stadium parking lot and heading west down Scripps Drive, sophomores will arrive at the Anderson Plaza in around 10 minutes, with plenty of time to buy food and get back to school before the fifth period bell rings. It can be inconvenient to take the time to park your car or lock up your bike, and students have found that it is actually faster to walk to Anderson Plaza than it is to bike there.

The street is crowded with students at the beginning of lunch; they walk in groups which then spread themselves out around the marketplace and mob the tables, creating havoc for store owners. But towards the end of lunch, when the swarms of students have left and the craziness has died down, the restaurants benefit from the sudden profit increase brought in by high school students.

For some, this is an occasional treat, and for others, a daily routine.

“My friends and I take the sophomore walk almost every day to get Quickly; it’s super convenient and quick,” junior Krissy Solley-Carroll said of last year’s lunches. Quickly is famous for its Asian fast food chain and tapioca tea, with drinks ranging in price from $1.69-$5.00, making it filling and affordable for students.

Nearby is Save Mart, which may be the most popular place to grab lunch for sophomores. An Arizona drink and food from the hot food counter makes for an easy to-go meal. In the same plaza is Taqueria Guadalajara, famed for its quick and delicious to-go Mexican food.

Everyone will forget to bring their lunch at least a couple of times a year, and when you are not in the mood for a school lunch, buying from a place like Quickly or Save Mart is an easy and enjoyable solution.

After sitting for hours in your classroom, sometimes it is nice to walk around at lunch instead of sitting for an even more extended period of time.

“It’s fun to commute [through walking] instead of driving,” junior Jalen Tangaan said.

Although the sophomore walk is a tradition for many students, marking their first year on a high school campus, many students remain at school and enjoy the collective atmosphere.

“My brother told me about it but I bring a lunch anyway so I’ve never really gone off campus,” junior Harrison Espino said about his sophomore year.

Eating off campus and eating at school can both be nice for social reasons.

“I’ll go out to lunch with my brother but other than that I just bring a lunch. The friends that I bring a lunch to eat with also eat at school,” junior Miles Herget said.
