After last year’s disappointingly early end to the season–a shocking 1-0 loss to St. Francis in the section semifinals–Davis High women’s soccer coach Sarah Stone says that the goal for this year’s team is “to be in that final game on May 21 for the section championship.”

The team had a stellar 12-1-1 Delta League record in the 2015 season, and hopes to build on that success; a 3-0 shellacking of Woodcreek in a preseason scrimmage Tuesday, Feb. 23 is a good omen.

“We have a lot of young talent as well as some returners, and I think we have the ability to do it,” Stone said. “It’s just–as we all know–it takes a lot of work to get there and to be the team that ends up on top on that particular day.”

Half of last year’s team graduated, so the 2016 squad–which will have to compete with local foes like Franklin, St. Francis and Elk Grove–has been adjusting to the new personnel.

“As far as talent and everything, we’re fine there,” Stone said. “It’s just the cohesiveness and some of the younger players just meshing in.”

Stone says one issue she noticed last year–which she hopes to improve this year–was consistency.

“In the big games, there’s a pretty big difference between being good and great,” the coach said, “and the great teams come out on top.”
