Last year, the men’s tennis team made it through the Delta League and Sac-Joaquin Section with a clean record, continuing its 14-year streak of winning all league matches. The team’s momentum was stifled by a loss in the NorCal semifinals, but by no means were the players demoralized.
According to junior Jasper Murphy–who will lead the team in the No. 1 singles spot–the main goal for the 2016 season is to beat Jesuit, who beat the Devils for the 2014 section title.
“[Jesuit is] going to be tough this year,” coach Dale Hersch explained. “This is only the second year we’ve played them in a league match–we could lose a league match [to them and break the streak] so they’re strong.”
Another significant player this season is sophomore Young Shim, who made the biggest jump up the ladder from No. 3 doubles to No. 4 singles.
Though Hersch would like to continue to put up a strong showing in league and section play, he said the goal is fundamentally to work hard and play the best the team can.
