Homecoming Rally Gets Students Excited for Homecoming Week

By Dorrie Harland

As Davis High students walked into the North Gym during extended time on Wednesday, Oct.18, they were welcomed by the pep band playing ‘Sweet Caroline’, ‘YMCA’, and the like, while stud gov. members greeted them in class-themed outfits.

Most seniors wore cowboy boots and hats, and overalls, juniors had fun with disco and dressed in sequins, and sophomores wore band shirts for their rock theme.

Teachers joined in on the fun as well. Counselor Kim Liu pulled inspiration from Madonna for her outfit, while DHS principal Bryce Geigle sported a Blink-182 shirt.

The DHS cheer team opened up the rally and built up students’ excitement. Once they ended their routine with a skillful lift, eliciting thunderous cheers from every grade, the football team tore through a ‘DHS Football’ banner and ran the course of the gym throwing shirts to the applauding crowd and escalating the homecoming spirit.

The awaited homecoming royalty results were announced and a drumroll of anticipation preceded each one. The winners were sophomores Bridget Berland and Lauren Lin, juniors Michael Monley and Taylor Rogers, and seniors Jasmine Anibaba and CJ Millican. As Anibaba and Millican took a celebratory photo, a few DHS football players held up signs behind them for a homecoming proposal witnessed by the whole school.

“Geigle! Geigle! Geigle!” the student body shouted as the senior versus staff tug-of-war round commenced. Geigle joined the teachers but the seniors still outnumbered the staff by almost double and dragged them through the air before winning.

In the seniors against juniors round, the rope unexpectedly snapped in half, sending students flying across the gym floor. They ultimately settled the tournament with a single round of rock paper scissors, which the seniors won.

The homecoming rally got DHS’s Blue Devil pride ready for the homecoming game on Friday. “We have an amazing week coming up”, homecoming rally MC Liam Langley said.

Participants and spectators expressed their hopes and opinions on the Hoco Rally.

The Hoco Rally took place during extended period in the North Gym. With the sole purpose of hyping the student body and spirit, the rally brought several opinions upon the crowd.

Prior to the event, students in Student Government, cheer and band worked hard to perfect their performance. Senior Paloma Campi believed the rally would be a success considering the large amount of preparation put into it. “As a member of the rally committee, we put in a lot of hard work but it’ll be worth it to get the student body fired up,” Campi said.

Sophomore senate Che Yang who also helped prepare for the rally, concurred with Campi. “The rally was fun and [I] loved the energy,” Yang said.

“The funniest part was when the seniors and juniors were going against each other and the rope broke,” sophomore Inkyung Hwang said. “I think it was pretty fun to watch.”

Although there were students who enjoyed the event, some thought otherwise.

A few DHS students thought the rope splitting was fake, and overall didn’t like how the Homecoming rally was during the extended period. Many spectators wanted to see more.

“It was okay, though I felt like there were many staged bits. All I’m saying is the band went through it,” sophomore band member Jongsuk Baik said.
