In the first regular season basketball game since a stands clearing brawl, the rivalry between Davis and Woodland resumed Tuesday night. This time around the intensity was absent as Davis demolished Woodland 60-34 before a miniscule crowd.

“We didn’t really feel the rivalry tonight, there wasn’t really any tension between us and there wasn’t any crazy fans,” sophomore forward Kevin Sorensen said.

Although it was only 25-19 at halftime, DHS broke it open in the second half to secure the win. “At first we had trouble with [Woodland’s] motion defense, I’m glad we figured it out were we able to come out on top,” Coach Dan Gonzalez said.

The Blue Devils improve to 3-1 while Woodland drops to 0-3.

The Blue Devils jumped to a quick 7-3 lead in the first quarter, but Woodland evened it up at 7-7 soon after.

After their quick start, the rest of DHS’ first half was marred by turnovers, missed free throws, and a couple of shots that flat out missed the basket. This gave the Woodland fans one chance to jeer Davis. The locals closed the half with a small run to go into halftime with the lead.

DHS opened the second half playing great defense, they only succumbed 15 points to the Wolves for the rest of the game. Elvis Bikoba provided a spark on defense with several steals and Kevin Sorensen had double digit rebounds.

On offense DHS minimized their turnovers and made more free throws. Senior Bryce Thompson led all scorers with 13 points.

The Blue Devils continued to expand their lead, so several reserves got a significant amount of playing time. The fourth quarter was dominated by Arnell Rusangawa who had seven points and two assists all in the last period. All Blue Devils got playing time.

Senior guard Brandon Hassid got into the scoring with a big three pointer late in the game. Junior big man Kristian Mackewicz had a flashy reverse layup off of an assist from Rusangawa.

“You know, hopefully next year we can bring more to this rivalry and make it a good game,” Wolves coach Bob Brian said.

The Devil’s play 1-1 Pioneer of Woodland next while the Wolves play 1-1 Vacaville.
