Latinos Unidos celebrates Latino heritage and culture on the Davis High campus. The club, restarted by staff and students this year, is looking for new members from all ethnicities.

According to Paulette Alvarez, an advisor for Latinos Unidos alongside counselor Elizabeth Arroyo, the club first started years ago but has not existed at DHS for a while.

“We were like, we need to bring it back up for (Latinx) students to have a club about their heritage,” Alvarez said.

Abel Unzueta, a paraeducator and interpreter who helps advise the club members, hopes to bring in Latino professionals from all kinds of backgrounds to speak to students about their successes and struggles in navigating the workplace.

“It’s also a safe haven for them in a predominantly white school…where they can feel connected and express themselves,” Unzueta said.

Junior Luis Carvajal, president of Latinos Unidos (and also a reporter for The HUB), wants to expand the club to include more members, as well as students from all ethnicities.

“We have a club fair next week so hopefully we can get more people to join,” Carvajal said.

Junior Alondra Marquez joined Latinos Unidos just before Winter Break started. She took initiative in designing club shirts, which they are now working to fundraise for.

“In March, we’re gonna do Kona Ice, so we can get funds so we can do more fun stuff,” Marquez said.

Marquez says that a movie night was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the club had other opportunities to bond.

“We also went to the Culture Fair and did a little presentation,” Marquez said.

Carvajal says that every DHS student and teacher is welcome to join. The club wants to encourage non-Latino people to come as well and learn about Hispanic culture.

Latinos Unidos usually gets pizza delivered to their meetings and everyone gets a slice—or more. The club meetings are on Tuesdays in the Academic Success Center next to the library.
