Head varsity football coach, Nicholas Garratt, is new to Davis High football and has big ambitions for the team. But to reach his goals players will have to adapt to his unfamiliar coaching style.

Garratt’s coaching values aren’t just focused on the game, he puts emphasis on not only making the athlete’s great football players but also great people. “I want to create empathetic men with the integrity and courage to make a great change in the world,” Garratt said.

One of his goals is to create a positive team culture that allows for personal growth.

To create this environment, he has implemented themed days to promote these values. The whole team participates in telling the truth Monday, competition Tuesday, Thursday group discussion circles, and Saturday yoga.

Garratt grew up in South Lake Tahoe surrounded by football. His passion for the game led him to play division 1 football at USC. After college, before coming to DHS he played professional football in Finland, Austria and Norway. He also coached in Italy.

“Coach Garratt brings youth and energy to the team that is exciting to see,” assistant coach Tanner Mohr said. “It’s cool to see the boys responding to Coach Garratt’s focus on both football and character.”

Davis High has had multiple head coaches come and go in the last decade and Mohr thinks that Garrat might have what it takes. “(He is) a young coach who wants to build out this community,” Mohr said.

Although Garratt places a lot of focus on growth, it does not take away from the team’s competitiveness. The motto: commit, compete, complete, is the first thing you notice when you walk into the team room.

Garratt wants everyone on the team to be the greatest they can be and to fully apply themselves. His advice for everyone is to, “find something you want to do and be great.”
