Flag football is a brand-new sport at Davis High that’s fighting for recognition.

Although it is the first year the sport is being recognized as a high school sport, close to 40 athletes make up both the varsity and JV teams.

Varsity quarterback, senior Tory Agnew, wanted to join the team after playing Powderpuff last year. The annual powderpuff game is a flag football game between the junior and senior girls, who are coached by tackle football players.

“To find out (flag football) was gonna be an actual sport was really exciting,” Agnew said.

Despite a show of interest in the sport, flag football does not have access to the same resources as tackle football or even the same priority for practice fields. Since the beginning of their season, flag football has held practice in the grass fields behind the stadium scoreboard while tackle football trains on the turf field.

Friday nights are reserved for tackle football, along with performances from the band, cheer team and dance team.

Flag football holds their games on weeknights with little to no official promotion from DHS administration or Student Government.

Varsity player Amorie Buncome took it into her own hands to promote the team’s games, writing about it on classroom whiteboards, asking teachers to spread the word and announcing it at tackle football games.

Although players are unhappy with the promotion of their sport, they are still optimistic for the season. “I feel like we have the power to (win most of our games),” Buncome said.

As it is the first season of flag football at DHS, there is a period of adjustment but the sport will have future seasons to iron it out.

The team’s record is currently sitting at 2-4.

“I’m just excited to see where it goes because I think that it has a lot of future,” Agnew said
